This fireplace was ready for a redo!
Is your fireplace dated and out of place with your decor, leaving you with only a cold feeling? Even though it can be a little bit intimidating to change the look of a fireplace, enhancing your tired fireplace can really make a huge difference in your room! Here are some tips for those of you who are on a budget from a redesign I did in Hendersonville, NC. Giving this old fireplace a new feel did not cost a lot of money…just some paint and some elbow grease and of course, a dose of creativity.
Because the entire color scheme in this home was going to change from warmer paint colors to a more modern look in white and cool greys, and since the structural integrity of the fireplace was in tact, I decided to change the older looking “mottled” tiles by painting them AND the existing grout a white color, specifically Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace in a Matte Finish. After applying 2 coats of Kilz primer to cover both the tiles and the grout, I followed up with 3 - 4 coats of paint. The metal pieces on the black doors needed to be changed from brass to silver, so I removed them and painted them with a heat resistant spray paint. I had to try two different shades of silver to match as closely as possible the new cabinet door handles I chose. These two steps were the “icing on the cake” to finish off the look. As a tip, you may want to do a fireplace redo like this in steps to make the project seem very manageable. I found that taking my time on this project helped it not feel like an overwhelming task.
Once the tiles and the fireplace mantle were painted I realized this fireplace was still lacking a sense of drama. To create depth and dimension and a sense of importance in the room I accented the wall a beautiful darker grey color. This color also served to pick up the new kitchen backsplash since the kitchen was visible from almost every angle in the room. Viola! This dated, drab fireplace that felt out of place before had become the star of the room providing a warm and inviting, current look and feel.
