Yes, less IS more when it comes to home staging! Let me explain. When you have too much furniture, artwork and accessories in a room, everything in the room just gets lost. It feels much better to enter a room and be able to appreciate several special things than to enter a room and not know where your eyes should land. Also, too much clutter in a room can give you a stressful feeling. When it comes to home staging, you definitely don’t want potential buyers to feel stressed.
Here is a quick example of a staging I did where we spent a lot of time decluttering the rooms in my customer’s home. She had some lovely furnishings and accessories to work with, but there was just too much of it. Here is the living room before we staged it:
BEFORE…
…AFTER!
Isn't this an amazing transformation?
With all of the knick knacks in the large cabinet on the far wall and accessories on top of it, the overall beauty of the cabinet truly got lost. Once those things were removed, my client’s very special mug collection was able to be showcased inside and both the cabinet and the mugs in it became special in the room. There were simply too many small tables along that same wall and too many little decorative items. The rug in front of the sofa was too small for the space, so it got packed up to go. See how the fireplace got lost in the room with too much clutter around it in the before picture? Look at the after picture and you will notice the fireplace takes it’s important focal point position in the room.
In conclusion, this room proves that “less IS more.” This staging was a success and the homeowner and I were both very happy!
